Essentials of Usool al-Fiqh
Instructor: Abdurrahmann Murad
Usool-ul-Fiqh refers to the science of obtaining rulings from proofs which are found in the Quran and Sunnah. These rulings form the basis of the Shariah and how it is implemented.
Usool-ul-Fiqh is taught to students of knowledge to endow them with the necessary intellectual abilities to be able to arrive at swift and accurate rulings in all aspects of life. One cannot reach the level of Ijtihaad that a student must reach in order to become a qualified scholar, except after mastering this sacred knowledge. Indeed, the knowledge of Usool-ul-Fiqh is what separates a scholar from a layman. As such, it is considered to be one of the most important branches of Islamic studies, without which one cannot fully understand the Fiqh of this religion itself.
This course will cover some of the essential rules of Usool-ul-Fiqh, what constitutes textual proof and how scholars deduce rulings from them. You will learn about how the duties of Islam are defined and categorised as well as how they affect our lives. For example, is doing just the fard and wajib enough? Is makrooh a sin? Are all haram actions of the same level? What are the criteria that make an action correct and hence accepted? The course will also look at the classical scholars in this field, their works and how they influenced the subject of Usool-ul-Fiqh. Find out about this and much more in this long awaited course.
